GW Owners, I have a 2018 GW with DCT. Recently my infotainment screen went black and I now have 5 asterisks to the N "Neutral" where it would normally indicate the transmission mode.
1. The bike runs FINE, shifts FINE in Auto and Manual. Just no infotainment, and unable to change DCT modes.
2. I disconnected the negative battery cable for 12mins in hopes to reset the system. No effect.
3. Battery when bike off 12.7vdc when on at idle 14.45vdc
4. I tried to reinitialize the DCT per the Cruiseman guidance. That did not work.
5. Dealer little help over phone and backed up for weeks.
Thoughts or suggestions. ???
I drove the GW 2 hours yesterday to the Honda Dealer in Richmond, VA. Run great, shifts great... just a dead infotainment system and cant change dct modes....
I hope they find a simple solution. (aka loose connection, or SW glitch...???) I fear a large bill on the horizon. Will let you know what they say.
I definitely want to hear what they have to say. Is the bike under warranty?
Not under warrantee. I am a ChatGPT guy... here is what it said.
What the dash is telling you... When the infotainment “head” (Audio / Navigation ECU) fails to boot the combination-meter can’t get the data it needs to show the current riding-mode graphic (TOUR / SPORT / ECON / RAIN). Instead it lights all five segments of that icon row; on the LCD they look like little “stars” or “snowflakes” and they blink together. Owners report exactly the same symptom—black TFT + five flashing stars beside the N indicator—whenever the Audio Unit drops off the CAN bus. Ref: gl1800riders.com, facebook.com
ChatGPT: Good news: the engine and DCT are on a different controller, so the bike will still start and run. (BAMADIGS: THIS IS TRUE, RUNS GREAT)
Bad news: the audio/nav ECU is almost certainly what’s offline, not the meter or the main ECU.
ME: I'm a new GW owner. Bought this bike last year. It is a 2018 and had 9,000 miles. I have been thrilled with the bike... so far. Gulp. The bike is at the Richmond, VA
https://richmondhondahouse.com/ Reviews are mixed.... Pray! :)
Unfortunately, the audio/nav unit is not even covered by an extended warranty. But, it could be something as simple as re-flashing the ECU, which would have to be done by a dealer.
Maybe you have this corrected already but if not. Try to disconnect the battery completely and let sit a minute or so the reconnect. It’s like doing a reboot on the system. Hope you get it solved
Thank you all for the time and advice. I picked up my bike yesterday at the Dealer. I did not allow them to complete their recommended corrections. They wanted over $7,500 to replace the ECU and Infotainment system. Rather, as fortune had it... I found the solution just yesterday. https://wingstuff.com/videos/what-should-you-do-audio-unit-repair-2018-honda-gold-wing. This video aligns exactly with my symptoms and the code the mechanic was willing to share. I will be doing the work myself! Thanks to people like Cruiseman, and Harmon for their insight and advice... we can continue to enjoy the best motorcycle the world has ever known. If I find anything different, I will share with this group. Regards, Joe
